Margaret Brown, now known as Molly, arrived in Leadville as a teenager in the early 1880s, working as a seamstress in a dry goods store. She eventually met and married J.J. Brown, at Annunciation Church in Leadville the summer of 1886. J.J. worked at the Ibex Mining Company's Little Johnny Mine, a gold mine on the east side of Leadville. J.J. helped create a solution to mine cave ins using a method of hay bales and timber. He was rewarded with shares of stock and a board position in the company, which lead to his wealth.
J.J.'s success allowed the Brown's to move to a mansion in Denver that still stands today. While Denver Margaret helped establish the first juvenile court, was the first woman to enroll at the Carnegie Institute and contintued to support worker's rights and children's literacy.
Her trip on the maiden voyage of the Titanic and heroic actions earned her the nickname the “Unsinkable” Molly Brown.
